Start a new Pro subscription

This page provides an overview of the steps you need to take to start a new Data Studio Pro subscription.

Activate complimentary Looker licenses

If your organization uses Looker, you can receive complimentary Data Studio Pro licenses. Select your version for instructions on how to subscribe and redeem these licenses:

• Looker (original)
• Looker (Google Cloud core)

Before you begin

To set up a self-service subscription to Data Studio Pro, you must meet all of the following requirements:

• You must be a Google Workspace or Cloud Identity user with a Managed Google account to subscribe to or use Data Studio Pro.
• You will need to provide a valid Google Cloud project that is linked to a billing account. Learn how to set up a Google Cloud billing account.
• You must have the Owner (roles/owner) or Data Studio Pro Manager (roles/lookerstudio.proManager) IAM role on the Google Cloud project that you use for Data Studio Pro.

• You must have the resourcemanager.projects.updateLiens permission on the Google Cloud project that you use for Data Studio Pro. This is required so that Google Cloud can create a lien on the Google Cloud project, which helps to prevent accidental deletion of your Data Studio Pro assets.

  Note: The resourcemanager.projects.updateLiens permission is granted by the Owner, Data Studio Pro Manager, and Project Lien Modifier roles. If you are creating custom roles to manage Data Studio Pro, be sure to include this permission in the role.

• Your organization must own the Google Cloud project that you use for Data Studio Pro.

  Tip: You can enable the Trusted Orgs feature to add users from other organizations to your Pro subscription. To enable the Trusted Orgs feature, follow these steps:

  1. Subscribe to Data Studio Pro. (Note: If you are unable to purchase a Data Studio Pro subscription because your user account's organization differs from the project's organization, proceed to step 3.)
  2. Obtain a valid support contract.
  3. Submit a request to Cloud Customer Care to enable the Trusted Orgs feature. You must include the customer domains and the customer organization IDs that you would like to add in your request.

• You must belong to the same organization that owns the Google Cloud project that is used for the subscription. (For example, you can't make someone who is outside your organization an owner on the project and have that outside user subscribe to Data Studio Pro on behalf of the organization.)

• The Google Cloud project that you use for Data Studio Pro must not be in use for a Pro subscription.

For more information about granting Cloud IAM roles, see the Manage access to projects, folders, and organizations documentation page. You might also be able to get the required permissions through custom roles or other predefined roles.

Ways to subscribe

You can subscribe to Data Studio Pro in the following ways:

• From within Data Studio
• From the Google Cloud console
• From the Google Workspace Admin console

Subscribe to Data Studio Pro from Data Studio

To subscribe to Data Studio Pro from within the product, follow these steps:

• Sign in to Data Studio.
• In the left navigation, click Pro subscription .
• Click Add subscription.

Subscribe to Data Studio Pro from the Google Cloud console

To subscribe to Data Studio Pro from the Google Cloud console, follow these steps:

• Navigate to the Data Studio homepage: https://console.cloud.google.com/looker-studio/home

  Note: If you're a Looker user who is setting up a Data Studio Pro subscription to make use of complimentary licenses, you will be automatically directed to the Data Studio homepage in the Google Cloud console, and your Google Cloud project will be pre-selected.

• If necessary, select the Google Cloud project to use with Data Studio Pro.

• Click Get started.

Subscribe to Data Studio Pro from the Google Workspace Admin console

To subscribe to Data Studio Pro from the Google Workspace Admin console, follow the instructions in Add & set up Data Studio Pro (opens in the Workspace Help Center).
