Manage and remediate issues

Required roles

To get the permissions that you need to work with issues, ask your administrator to grant you the following IAM roles on the organization, folder, or project:

For more information about granting roles, see Manage access to projects, folders, and organizations.

These predefined roles contain the permissions required to work with issues. To see the exact permissions that are required, expand the Required permissions section:

Required permissions

The following permissions are required to work with issues:

  • To view issues at the organization level:
    • securitycenter.issues.get
    • securitycenter.issues.list
    • securitycenter.issues.group
    • securitycenter.issues.listFilterValues
  • To view issues at the folder or project level:
    • securitycenter.issues.get
    • securitycenter.issues.list
  • To mute and unmute issues at the organization level: securitycenter.issues.mute

You might also be able to get these permissions with custom roles or other predefined roles.

View issues

You can investigate issues in Security Command Center on the following pages:

  • The Overview page displays issues found on the following dashboards:

    • All Risk
    • AI Security
  • The Issues page lists issues for the selected organization, folder, project, or application. The page provides details about each issue, including how to remediate it.

These pages let you view issues at the organization, folder, or project level. When viewing these pages at the folder or project level, Security Command Center displays only issues created by security graph rules and Correlated Threats (Preview).

To view toxic combinations and chokepoint issues created by Risk Engine, select the organization level.

View issues on the Overview page

To view issues on the Overview page, complete the following steps:

  1. In Google Cloud console, go to the Security Command Center Risk Overview page.

    Go to Risk Overview

  2. In the console purview picker, select your Google Cloud organization, folder, or project. The page displays issues and dashboard data supported by the selected scope.
  3. Optional: To filter by an App Hub application, by using the Select app menu.
  4. Click either All Risk or AI Security to view issues on the respective dashboard.
  5. In the Riskiest issues panel, select an issue to view.

View issues on the Issues page

  1. In Google Cloud console, go to the Security Command Center Issues page.

    Go to Issues

  2. In the Google Cloud console purview picker, select the organization, folder, or project to limit the view to issues in that scope.
    • When you view the page at the organization scope, issues from all sources appear on the page.
    • When you view the page at the folder or project scope, Security Command Center displays only issues created by security graph rules and Correlated Threats where the primary resource is in the selected scope.
  3. To filter by an application, select Application, and then select an application from the Select app menu.
  4. To filter by another attribute, such as resource type, domain or scope, click Add filter, and then select the appropriate filter criteria.
  5. Expand a detection group, and then click an individual issue in the group. The issue details panel opens and displays the following information:

    • A summary of the issue.
    • An interactive attack path or evidence diagram. Security Command Center displays the Detection value for context. If you don't have the required IAM permissions to access information about resources, that information is hidden and the panel displays only the service type.
    • Findings related to the issue.
    • For Correlated Threats, the MITRE ATT&CK tactics section, which provides details about the nature of the attack that's tied to the issue.
    • A How to fix tab, which provides remediation steps.
    • For toxic combinations and chokepoints, an Exposed valued resources tab, which lists the high-value resources that are affected by the issue.
    • For security graph insights, an Impacted Resources tab, which lists the resources that contribute to the issue. This tab appears if more than six resources contribute to an issue.
    • A JSON tab, which provides the issue data in JSON format.
  6. Click the How to fix? tab to review recommended remediation steps for resolving the underlying misconfigurations.

  7. To review additional issues in the group, click the arrow icons next to Take Actions.

Troubleshooting tips when viewing issues at the folder or project level

If you experience a problem while viewing issues at the folder or project level, check the following common causes and solutions.

No issues appear at the folder or project level

  • Supported issue types: Scoped views for issues in the Google Cloud console are supported only with issues created by security graph rules and Correlated Threats.
  • Missing organization-level activation: Security Command Center uses organization-wide security scanning to identify issues. Verify that the Security Command Center Premium organization-wide security scanning. Verify that the Security Command Center Premium or Enterprise tier is activated at the organization level. Project-level activations don't support issues.
  • Scope attribution: An issue appears in a project or folder view only if the primary resource resides in that project or folder.
  • IAM permissions: Ensure that you have the required IAM role on the selected folder or project.

Information about secondary resources is hidden or lacks details

When investigating an issue that includes secondary resources that you don't have access to, the Detection value is displayed for context. However, other details about secondary resources might be hidden.

  • Cause: Security Command Center enforces context-based privacy filtering. Details are hidden for resources located in projects where you lack IAM permissions to view.
  • Solution: If you require full visibility into the project's resources, ask an administrator to grant you one of the required roles on that specific project.

Remediate issues

To remediate an issue, complete the following instructions:

View all issues

  1. To view all issues, go to the Security Command Center Issues page.

    Go to Issues

  2. In the Google Cloud console resource level picker, select your Google Cloud organization, folder, or project. You can also filter by an App Hub application using the Select app menu.

Sort by attack exposure score

  1. By default, grouped issues are ranked by severity. Within the group, the issues are ranked by attack exposure score. To sort all issues by attack exposure score instead, disable Group by detections.

  2. Select an issue.

  3. Review the issue's description and evidence.

Access findings details and take action

You can view details about any active finding to help identify the root cause of an issue. Depending on the issue, you can also filter results by resource, explore full attack paths, or view remediation guidance.

  1. To access more information for any finding, click View details. If multiple critical issues are found on a primary resource in a toxic combination or chokepoint, a message appears after the Evidence diagram.
  2. To optimize your remediation efforts on findings, follow these steps as needed:

    • Filter issues for the resource: To focus on resolving issues for a specific resource, click Filter issues for this primary resource in Add filter. If you want to remove the filter, click the back arrow next to Open filter panel Add filter.

    • Explore full attack paths: For a more in-depth understanding of the issue and how the attack paths expose high-value resources, click Explore full attack paths in the Evidence diagram. Note that details about resources are hidden if they are located outside the selected folder or project where you don't have the required IAM permissions.

    • Get mitigation guidance: to help mitigate the risk, click How to fix and follow the provided instructions.

Mute issues

If the risk that's posed by an issue is acceptable to your business or you can't remediate it, you can choose to mute it. This tags the issue as muted, and records who muted the issue and when. You can only mute individual issues, not entire detections. To mute an issue, you must view the page at the organization level.

To mute an issue, complete the following steps:

  1. Open an issue details panel.
  2. Click Take Actions.
  3. Click Mute.
  4. Enter the reason why you are muting the issue, and then click Mute.

After you've muted an issue, it can take a few minutes for this to be reflected in the issues list. After this, the issue won't show in the list with the default filters applied.

View muted issues

To view muted issues, click Add filter Add filter, and then add a Show muted issues filter with a value of Yes. Click Apply to apply the filter.

Unmute issues

To unmute an issue, complete the following steps:

  1. Filter the view by muted issues.
  2. Open the issue's details panel.
  3. Click Take Actions.
  4. Click Unmute.
  5. Enter the reason why you are unmuting the issue, and then click Unmute.
