This document compares the Developer and Commercial editions of Spanner Omni. These two Spanner Omni editions support your operational requirements, ranging from local prototyping to production-grade deployments. Compare features, terms, support, expiration, and costs to choose the best licensing strategy.
Select an edition based on your project phase and infrastructure needs:
Developer edition: An edition available at no charge for non-production environments, such as local development, testing, and prototyping. The default license of the Developer edition is activated by default for 90-day use when you deploy Spanner Omni. If you deploy on a single server with four vCPUs or fewer, you can use the enterprise backup and restore feature beyond 90 days without requiring an upgrade to a commercial license. The Developer edition doesn't include premium support.
Commercial edition: A paid subscription option for production and commercial workloads. You can purchase a subscription by contacting Google. The Commercial edition includes all enterprise features and qualifies for premium support.
Developer edition
Use the Developer edition to evaluate, test, build prototypes, and run demonstrations of Spanner Omni. The Developer edition is available at no charge. Configure a single-server deployment with four vCPUs or fewer to use enterprise features, including backup and restore, without an expiring license. The workers feature isn't supported under the Default or Developer license, regardless of the number of servers or vCPUs used.
The Developer edition supports two license types:
Default: Each new deployment installs this license without requiring a license key. It expires 90 days after creation, after which the deployment disables writes while data remains queryable. Single-server deployments configured with four vCPUs or fewer don't expire and support enterprise features such as backup and restore. If you scale the deployment beyond a single server or four vCPUs, it returns to the default 90-day expiration limit based on deployment creation time unless you install a Developer license.
Developer: A perpetual license key available at no charge that lets you use the Developer edition beyond the initial 90-day period. You can request a perpetual license and install it at any time, including after the default license expires. Spanner Omni also provides a link in the Spanner Omni console or the Spanner Omni CLI to request the key. Developer license keys are non-transferable and must be used for a single deployment only.
Commercial edition
The Commercial edition supports commercial and production workloads and includes all features. The Spanner Omni Commercial edition supports two license types:
- Proof of concept: This paid pre-production license is for testing and evaluation in commercial or production environments. Google charges a quarterly subscription fee per vCPU. It expires 90 days after issuance. To let you evaluate the full capabilities of Spanner Omni at production scale, this license supports all features, including data protection features, for deployments of any size. To purchase or extend a proof-of-concept license, contact Google.
- Commercial license : This paid production license has an annual subscription. Google charges this fee per vCPU. The license terms align with your commercial contract. To purchase a non-expiring production license, contact Google. It supports all features and lets you purchase Cloud Customer Care for premium support. You must maintain compliance with your license agreement.
