For GKE cluster version 1.34.1-gke.3899001 (sidecar mounter image version 1.21.9) and later affected versions, Cloud Storage FUSE volumes might fail to mount if the GKE metadata service isn't ready when the Cloud Storage FUSE sidecar initiates.

When this issue occurs, you might see the following error:

MountVolume.SetUp failed for volume "volume-name" : rpc error: code = Internal desc = the sidecar container terminated due to Error, exit code: 255

Additionally, the gcsfuse-sidecar container displays the following error:

Failed to fetch identity pool and identity provider details required for bucket access check, got error Failed to set up metadata service: failed to get project: Get "http://X.X.X.X/computeMetadata/v1/project/project-id": dial tcp 169.254.169.254:80: connect: connection refused for identity pool PROJECT_ID.svc.id.goog and identity provider https://container.googleapis.com/v1/projects/PROJECT_ID/locations/LOCATION/clusters/CLUSTER_NAME

Mitigation

To resolve this issue, perform one of the following mitigations:

  1. Upgrade your cluster to one of the following fixed GKE versions:

    • 1.34.8-gke.1218000 or later
    • 1.35.3-gke.2347000 or later
    • 1.36.0-gke.1266000 or later.

  2. Create an init container in your Pod that validates metadata service availability.

  3. Manually inject the sidecar to ensure the sidecar is blocked by an init container.

Issue

In GKE version 1.35 and later, due to faster node startup, workloads that use Dataplane V2 and Workload Identity Federation for GKE to authenticate to Google Cloud APIs might experience transient connectivity timeouts or refused connections to the GKE metadata server immediately following node startup.

For recommendations and workarounds if this impacts your workload (for example, if your workload doesn't retry requests until they succeed), see Timeout errors at Pod startup, specifically by deploying an initContainer.

Alternatively, add any that selects no workloads, such as in a namespace with no workloads—to GKE Dataplane V2, network policy—including one which disables the faster node startup. Improvements are in progress and coming in a future GKE patch.

A fix is available for an issue that caused incomplete file reads and premature end-of-file (EOF) errors when you used the Cloud Storage FUSE CSI driver on ARM64 nodes that use 64 KiB page sizes, such as A4X and A4X Max instances. This issue occurred because the kernel read-ahead mechanism triggered read requests that exceeded the capacity of the Cloud Storage FUSE layer.

Fixed

In GKE versions earlier than 1.34.6-gke.1154000 and 1.35.2-gke.1691000, mounting Cloud Storage buckets by using the Cloud Storage FUSE CSI driver can experience significant delays. This issue typically manifests as a CreateContainer error that states the following message: failed to reserve container name. This error is self-healing and resolves automatically after the underlying mount operation completes and the container runtime releases the reservation.

The delay is caused by an inefficient bucket access check performed by the CSI driver sidecar by using the ListObjects API method, which can take several hours to complete on buckets that contain millions of empty folders.

The error occurs because the kubelet enforces a strict two-minute timeout for the container creation request. If the FUSE mount process exceeds this time limit while the sidecar is performing the initial bucket access check, then the kubelet cancels the operation and retries. However, the container runtime remains blocked on the first attempt and retains the reservation for the container name.

The new GKE releases fix this issue by replacing the ListObjects check with the GetStorageLayout API method, which performs the same validation but returns almost instantly in most cases.

To resolve this issue, upgrade your cluster to one of the following versions:

  • 1.34.6-gke.1154000 or later
  • 1.35.2-gke.1691000 or later

For GKE version 1.33 clusters running version 1.33.5-gke.2435000 or later, you can mitigate this issue by setting the skipCSIBucketAccessCheck: "true" volume attribute to bypass the check.

There is no supported fix for this issue in cluster versions 1.33.5-gke.2435000 and earlier.

The validation of the HealthCheckPolicy custom resource from the GKE Gateway API is more rigorous in GKE version 1.34 and later. Existing HealthCheckPolicy resources that already contain mismatched type fields in the config are exempted and continue to function. However, updates to any existing policy must not introduce a mismatched type field in the config or change currently mismatched fields to new invalid values.

When the HealthCheckPolicy custom resource is validated, the type field is now verified against the specified health check. For example, if type: TCP is specified but httpHealthCheck is configured, then the fields are mismatched and kubectl rejects the policy. However, for this same example, if type: TCP is specified and tcpHealthCheck is configured, then the fields are valid.

Earlier versions of GKE accept custom resources that don't have matching fields. If you use an earlier version, the type field is used and the configuration in the health check field is ignored.

Expanded coverage for compute flexible committed use discounts (CUDs) is available to all Cloud Billing accounts. All Cloud Billing accounts have been automatically migrated to the new spend-based CUD model and you no longer need to opt in to benefit from the expanded coverage.
