AlloyDB Omni for containers

AlloyDB Omni for containers is a downloadable database software package that offers a downloadable version of AlloyDB for PostgreSQL for deployment in a standalone instance in your environment. While sharing core components with the fully-managed AlloyDB service on Google Cloud, AlloyDB Omni uses the standard file system interface used by PostgreSQL, as opposed to AlloyDB for PostgreSQL's cloud-native storage layer.

AlloyDB Omni for containers acts like a highly optimized, self-managing PostgreSQL database that brings Google Cloud's performance and AI capabilities to your local or private cloud infrastructure, offering flexibility and powerful features.

Use this deployment model when you need the power of AlloyDB Omni for a single application or for development purposes, especially in environments where Kubernetes isn't available or necessary. You can also use AlloyDB Omni on containers when you need a database that can operate offline or can be located close to users to minimize latency.

Use cases

Choose AlloyDB Omni for containers if you need one or more of the following. To start using this deployment option, see AlloyDB Omni for containers overview.

  • Single application database: when you need a high-performance database dedicated to a single application.
  • Development and testing: for setting up a database environment on a developer's laptop or in a testing environment.
  • Non-Kubernetes environments: when your infrastructure doesn't use Kubernetes or when you don't need the complexity of a container orchestrator.
  • Offline operations: for applications that must continue to function even when they are disconnected from the internet.
  • Low-latency requirements: when you need to place the database geographically close to your users to achieve the fastest possible response times.
